But First, Ed's Advice on Painting With Water

In Maya's use of water on these spectacular cookies, and not high-proof alcohol or the Color Solution (click here), it is ok and will not damage her royal icing for a few reasons.  First, this is a brushed technique, not a flooded royal icing where it created a glossy shell. If you apply water to a fully flooded cookie, there's a high probability of creating pitting when using water.

But because of her technique, in this instance, even if pitting happens it will only add to the texture she is aiming for within the petals of her beautiful cookies.  Our ultimate recommendation for painting floral cookies is to use The Color Solution or High-Proof Alcohol, such as Everclear!

Now For Maya's Instructions!

Sharing my top tips for perfectly piped and painted floral cookies! All of the decorating details are below along with my favorite @thesugarart powdered colors.

Inconsistent outlines: Starting with wavy outlines help to give florals a naturally effortless finish. Plus they are fun and forgiving to pipe!

Brushed layers: Layering royal icing and brushing thin with a damp paintbrush gives instant texture and dimension (I’m using @thesugarart brush set).

Painted details: Edible paint truly transforms the look of the cookie and is the quickest and easiest step thanks to my favorite @thesugarart powdered colors. I like to mix the color with water, but @thesugarart also makes a great Color Solution for mixing if you are nervous about over-saturating your icing surface. For this Iris cookie I used the color English Lavender for the highlights (I buffed in a small dot of color on the high points with a damp brush) and I used the color Mona Lisa for the shadows and detail work (to define the border, I outlined with the color and then used a damp brush to pull and blend the color). For the stems my go-to green is the color Fern and my favorite yellow color is Golden Leaf. I always end with a splatter of loose white color, trust me, it’s magic✨

Edible pollen: The perfect finishing touch is a little dry dust of @thesugarart Golden Leaf around the center. The application works best if your cookie is still tacky from painting.
